Canada’s new food guide, released in January, embraces brown rice! Health Canada (HC) now advocates Canadians fill half their meal plate with fruits and vegetables; a quarter with whole grain foods (brown rice, quinoa, whole grain pasta); and a quarter with protein foods (lentils, nuts, tofu, lean meat, fish, low fat dairy and cheeses). The food plate guide HC developed features brown rice.
Canadians are encouraged to eat whole foods; choose plant-based proteins over animal sources; and eat less processed foods (that are high in sugar, sodium and saturated fats). Fruit juice is out, water is in.
